Leader Tornedalen is a non-profit association that works with rural development in Tornedalen's four municipalities – Kiruna, Pajala, Övertorneå, and Haparanda.
Rural development through the leader method
Leader is a method where the business community, non-profit, and public parties work together to develop their place. The method is used throughout the EU and is based on the idea that local development is most effectively and sustainably carried out by those who live and operate in an area. They are also the ones who know what needs and challenges need to be met.
Through Leader, there is an opportunity to apply for support for development projects that contribute to the goals in the leader area's strategy.
Our strategy
The Leader area Tornedalen 2030 includes four municipalities: Kiruna, Pajala, Övertorneå, and Haparanda. Leader areas exist throughout Sweden, and each area has a local development strategy that forms the basis for development in the area.
The strategy constitutes the framework for our activities during the years 2023-2027 and thus guides our work and how our funds will be distributed during the period. The strategy is based on local needs and has been developed in collaboration between the public, non-profit, and private sectors. The strategy is used, among other things, to guide the board's work with prioritization and selection of project applications.
Our staff and board
The association's staff is tasked with supporting and helping individuals and organizations that want to develop Tornedalen. The staff is present both at the leader office in Övertorneå and in the northern and southern parts of the leader area. Contact us for help with your development idea!
Leader Tornedalen is a non-profit association where the work is led by the association's board. The board members represent organizations from the private, non-profit, and public sectors; for example, officials and politicians from municipalities/regions, active members of associations, and entrepreneurs in the area. The distribution between the sectors is important because the leader method is based on collaboration. It is the board that is responsible for ensuring that the association works according to the development strategy and decides on the distribution of project support.
